Although we don’t always like to admit it, many of us use processed convenience foods when we’re busy and short on time. These products have little nutritional value, and often contain fillers and artificial ingredients. Boxed macaroni and cheese is a popular convenience food that has stood the test of time. Yet many consumers are unaware that most brands contain artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, and genetically modified organisms. As a health conscious wife and mother, I wanted to find a minimally processed, more natural brand of boxed macaroni and cheese brand to feed my family. “Annie’s” brand was the perfect choice!
The “Annie’s” brand can be found in the health food section of most major grocery stores. The cost is usually less than $3.00 a box, and occasionally I’ve even seen it on sale for $.99. There are organic and non-organic options, and all of Annie’s products are made with natural ingredients. One of my personal favorites is Annie’s Spirals with Butter & Parmesan, which is made with organic wheat pasta, Parmesan cheese, milk, salt, butter, and whey. Annie’s products are completely free of GMO’s (genetically modified organisms), and indeed the company is actively involved in keeping GMO’s out of the food supply and supports the labeling of foods that contain them. With public concern mounting over the presence of GMO’s in food, Annie’s is an excellent choice for a healthier alternative. Annie’s products also contain no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. The cheese included is 100% real cheese in a powdered form, and is sourced from cows not treated with the Growth Hormone rBST. The pasta contains at least 8 grams or more of whole grains per serving. My only issue regarding the products is the sodium content…all contain 500 mg or more per serving, a number I would like the company to reduce. But on the whole, Annie’s products are a much healthier, more natural alternative to conventional brands of boxed macaroni & cheese. Annie’s is also an environmentally responsible company, using renewable energy credits; and their packaging is 100% recycled paperboard.
Considering all of these healthy, natural benefits, it’s no surprise that Annie’s Macaroni & Cheese products taste delicious! I’ve sampled them all, and I always return for more. For those who prefer a milder cheese flavor, the Shells & White Cheddar is a great option, and there is a 100% organic version. Other varieties include Organic Shells & Real Aged Wisconsin Cheddar, Organic Alfredo Shells & Cheddar, and Organic 5-Grain Elbows & White Cheddar. And for the kids, there is an “Arthur” version of Annie’s Mac & Cheese with pasta shaped like the popular cartoon character. As a health conscious consumer, I feel confident choosing Annie’s products for myself and my family. Annie’s proves that convenience food can be nutritionally sound and delicious as well.
